Church History I (HIST 301) offers an introduction to the history of Christian Church from the 1st -9th centuries AD. The focus of this course is on the historical development of the Church, encompassing the social, cultural, and religious contexts of the periods under exploration. Students will be introduced to key figures and events such as the seven Ecumenical Councils, the development of church architecture, the political and social dynamics of the Late Roman Empire, the reigns of Constantine and Justinian, the barbarian kingdoms of the West, the rise of monasticism, and more. Through the reading of primary and secondary source material, students will leave the course with a framework for the historical development of Christianity with the first millennium.
