SPR 301 introduces students to the foundations of Orthodox Christian spiritual theology and spirituality. The course centers on two classic dimensions of the Orthodox tradition: the broad theological vision of the Christian life as union with God (theosis), and the practice of inner prayer as the concrete path by which that life is cultivated. Through the careful reading of two complementary texts, students gain both a framework for understanding Orthodox spirituality and an entry into its most characteristic practice, the Jesus Prayer. The course invites students to engage in this material prayerfully, vocationally, and ministerially.
