This theology course has been developed for the non-Orthodox student as well as the Orthodox Christian seeking a deeper knowledge of their own tradition. Its content is the mixture of a broad survey and some fine detail, which introduces theology and explains theological studies in the context of the Christian East. Based primarily on the writings of Christos Yannaras, this course will involve an exploration of theology as both an explanation of faith and an intellectual tradition. It will also include information about the development and practice of theology in the Christian West.
At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to
• Explain what theology is and what constitutes theological studies
• Identify theology as both an explanation of faith and an intellectual tradition.
• Detect the essential facets of the theology of the Christian East
• Define the theological approach of Christos Yannaras
• Discern basic similarities and differences between Eastern and Western Christian theology.
