Utilizing Fr. Stephen De Young’s primary text, God is a Man of War, students will confront and navigate complex, nuanced, and historically challenging biblical passages. Structured across an 8-week format, the curriculum explores the “problem” of violence in the Old Testament by analyzing the historical context of the Bronze Age Near East and examining the “Divine Warrior” literary genre. Rather than dismissing difficult texts, students are guided to interpret individual accounts of warfare through the grand narrative of Scripture and the “Christus Victor” model. Crucially, the course bridges academic hermeneutics with practical ministry, requiring students to directly connect these theological themes to spiritual struggle within their specific vocational context.
